  Goals: Charm
  James T Kirk's Hydrospanner
Dashing, debonair, and a little erratic, Lieutenant Kalhoun leads with the kind of take-charge attitude that leaves his enemies fuming and his subordinates dumbfounded. A bit sullen and difficult when not in command, he nevertheless is quick to take initiative when given the chance, usually being able to anticipate the Captain's next command.

Season 2 Evaluation

Lieutenant (JG) John Kalhoun. Lieutenant Kalhoun has shown decisiveness and effective leadership abilities when in command. When not in command he is a bit too independent and has a habit of ignoring the intent of his commander. Although I can't argue with Kalhoun's success, he does not optimally handle first contact situations and his missions have a tendency of involving an inordinate amount of phaser fire. Kalhoun has a hard time trusting people, which sets up an atmosphere not conducive to friendly relations. Lieutenant Kalhoun is fine where he is and needs more seasoning before he becomes a full Lieutenant. He should be given one or two low intensity missions so that he can get used to handling nonviolent situations.

Season 3 Evaluation

Lieutenant, JG John Kalhoun. Lieutenant Kalhoun is an anachronism and an enigma. He insists on continuing to emulate his hero, the infernal James T. Kirk, but lacks the gifted ability, diplomatic competence, and years of experience of the late Admiral. He always has to be right and when his mind is made up he discards any contradictory evidence. Unfortunately I think I came down too hard on the poor lad after one particular incident. Of late Lieutenant Kalhoun has become hesitant and shies away from making immediate decisions, preferring to pass the buck up the chain of command. I'm not sure what to do about this, other than keep giving him missions and hoping he'll work through his current problems.
