November 2024
Diary - Nov 23 to Nov 29 2024
Nov 30 2024
Sat Nov 23 2024
Sleep 0630 to 1430 (8 hours)
- Forgot about the ElfQuest Classic Deluxe KS which ended a couple weeks ago but you can still do late pledges. I did have the boxed 1E set as a teen though only read it and I don’t think I’ve read the comics. Would not just be a nostalgia purchase but a nostalgia purchase of something I only somewhat liked. Guess I’ll pass since it’s a pricey $100 boxed set + shipping. Even $50 for PDF only is quite a bit.
Sun Nov 24 2024
Sleep 0615 to 1230 (6-1/4 hours)
- MacWhisper on an M4 Pro CPU doesn’t trigger fan and runs about 8x to 16x faster than on my Intel MBP. Handbrake triggers fan (but it does run 3x faster on this Mac).
Mon Nov 25 2024
Sleep 0615 to 1230 (6-1/4 hours)
- Copied some of my home tv shows to new MBP and when adding to TV app it still has meta-data, so I could just copy all the video files from one machine to the other and only lost some data (e.g. I’m guessing Play Count).
Tue Nov 26 2024
Sleep 0300 to 0730, 90m nap (6 hours)
- macOS: Docked applications that aren’t on startup disk show as ? in Dock I guess because remote volume doesn’t mount until after Dock is initialized. This also applies to Login Items.
Wed Nov 27 2024
Sleep 0400 to 1630 (10-1/2 hours)
- I did have my alarm wake me up at noon but then I was still tired and went back to sleep.
- C3 dinner. Leftovers.
- Csr, Cjr, and I played a game of Unlock! (a circus scenario). It's a puzzle game with cards where a lot of clues are numbers and you tend to add two numbers to get to the next card. The clues are rather clever. Sometimes it's hidden in the picture and sometimes you have to physically arrange the cards right.
Thu Nov 28 2024
Sleep 0315 to 0900 (5-3/4 hours)
- Drove to parents in the morning.
- Turkey dinner with parents, C3, Steph, and Jaime who is my nephew and studying here in the States.
- Dad mentioned we still have Peruvian and Chinese citizenship. Mom clarified that it’s Taiwan.
Fri Nov 29 2024
Sleep 0130 to 0700, 2-1/2 hours of napping (8 hours)
- DC Heroes RPG 40th Anniversary reprint KS. $695 for everything (though a few books are not in the reprint list). You also get slipcases to hold your collection and for sets of cool 2d10 dice. Add $90 for shipping. No PDFs. Since I already have everything in print and for the most part it’s a straight reprint there’s not much point for me. Contrast with Ars Magica Definitive Edition KS that I backed even though it’s essentially a reprint of a couple of books, a few changes, reformatted, and with new art. But it’s one volume that’ll look good on a bookcase.
Black Friday Sales
Nov 28 2024
Black Friday Apple Deals
M4 Pro 14" MBP (12C CPU, 16C GPU, 24GB RAM, 512B SSD): $1,749 ($250 off)
- bought this last week from B&H. Nice that the price hasn't gotten lower.
M4 Pro 16" MBP (14C CPU, 20C GPU, 24GB RAM, 512B SSD): $2,199 ($300 off)
- not a bad option I guess but CPU upgrade and bigger screen are not as important as getting extra drive space via an external SSD. My new MBP is so much faster than my old Intel MBP that I'm satisfied even though it's the lowest end M4 Pro.
DDO Black Friday Offers
I bought Vecna Unleashed Ultimate Fan Bundle for $50 (50% off). It came out August 2023.
Magic of Myth Drannor came out last August and is 10% off which is fair. I'll wait until it's at least 50% off.
Black Friday Streaming Deals
Paramount+ $6 for two months would be nice to catch up on Star Trek. Passed on this since I have enough stuff to watch right now.
DirveThruRPG Black Friday Sale
I'll probably buy Tide World of Mani $9.10 (30% off), "a revolution sandbox adventure module for the Mothership Sci-Fi Horror RPG." This author also did Desert Moon of Karth which I own though haven't read.

- Google is moving location history to on-device and wants you to confirm settings. Options are keep all or keep last 3/18/36 months. Apparently can't actually turn it off since I have Apple Maps for location history.

Mon Nov 18 2024

- Finished budget cover letter.
Tue Nov 19 2024
Sleep 0100 to 0330, 0930 to 1500. (8 hours)
- Bought Shadowrun novels Humble Bundle ($18). This one has the Catalyst Game Labs novels and anthologies (like for BattleTech they did a lot of serialized fiction on a pay-for site). The bundle also had the previous bundle ($12) which was all the classic novels from FASA and WizKids.
- Received final Reserve Study this night. Not sure if we missed deadline to get everything printed at the regular printer.
- Placed an order at B&H for a MBP 14" M4 Pro 12/16 24 GB Memory/512 GB SSD ($1750 after $250 discount) and a Samsung T7 4TB ($285). Total with tax $2235.
Wed Nov 20 2024

- Dinner with C3 and Steph. Costco rotisserie chicken with rice and macaroni and cheese, and broccoli.
Thu Nov 21 2024
Sleep 0715 to 1445 (7-1/2 hours)
- FedEx web site login screen is not coded right so Safari doesn't recognize login fields. Anyway, tried to change delivery address yesterday (to a FedEx location) but apparently too late for it to take.
Fri Nov 22 2024
Sleep 0215 to 0345, 0930 to 1400 (6 hours)
- Rainy day and almost slipped and fell a few times. Picked up my new MBP M4 Pro.
- First hiccup. If I have home folder on an external drive and the drive is encrypted then login fails.

The Bloodmarch.- supplement and campaign setting in the demon-infested lands
Raven's Purge.- campaign module with 8 adventure sites and epic campaign finale
Dragonbane RPG (don't own this)
Bestiary
Twilight: 2000 RPG (already own full line)
Urban Operations
Coriolis RPG (already own most of this)
Mercy of the Icons p1 - Emissary Lost - Two adventures, scenario generator, background
Mercy of the Icons p2 - The Last Cyclade
Mercy of the Icons p3 - Wake of the Icons
Last Voyage of the Ghazali - 72-page adventure
Atlas Compendium
Since I already have most of this it's not worth it. Tales of the Loop and Twilight 2K are the only two that are complete here so it's a mixed recommendation. I like Free League production values. Their games are more designed for sandbox play though I've never played nor run them.

GI JOE RPG Bundle
Nov 19 2024
GI Joe Roleplaying Game Humble Bundle is for the third RPG that uses Renegade Game Studios' Essence 20 System. I'm not especially impressed with Transformers and Power Rangers but it'd be nice to complete it and the games are inter-playable (at least there are cross-over adventures so I'm guessing inter-playable as-is no special rules).
The 14-item non-physical part of the bundle is $18 for:
GI JOE Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook (2022) - 354 pages
Quartermaster's Guide to Gear (2024) - 128-page supplement
Cobra Codex Sourcebook (2023) - 234-page supplement
Ferocious Fighters: Factions in Action v1 (2024) - 98 page supplement with 7 factions
Intercontinental Adventures: Factions in Action v2 (2024) - three unaligned factions
Sgt. Slaughter Limited Edition Accessory Pack (2023) - 40-page mini-sourcebook
Operation: Cold Iron (2022) - 144-page 4-part adventure
Emerald Oubliette (2022) - 48-page adventure from the Game Master Screen (Screen only in physical bundle)
Operation Spring Cleaning (2023) - 32-page pdf-only adventure
Welcome to Treacherous Coils of Cobra (2023) - 42-page pdf-only adventure
Operation Close Call - pdf-only adventure
Cobra/Con Fusion (2023) - 32-page cross-over adventure
Free Bonus Material
Essence 20 Field Guide to Action and Adventure (2023) - 290-page supplement included in previous bundles

Diary - Nov 09 to Nov 15 2024
Nov 16 2024
Sat Nov 09 2024
Sleep 0430 to 1100 (6-1/2 hours)
- Gloomhaven with all four players. My Mindthief is now setup as a controller but I only have 2 (of 10?) controller cards in my deck: One with make enemy our ally for a turn (range 3); a second with the same (range 5) OR let adjacent ally attack 4 (with any bonuses I have which is usually +2 attack so effectively attack 6). Turn enemy for a turn is burn and ally attacks is reusable and I managed to use it twice but my play style I'm usually not near allies who are also near enemies.
Sun Nov 10 2024
Sleep 0515 to 1315 (8 hours)
- Received my Braun 8577cc shaver. The user manual is crap. Only drawings showing how everything works and no text. I looked to see if there any other Braun manuals but nope other versions are also all drawings. Mostly miffed because some of the drawings don't make sense to me. Oh and the power connector did change so good thing I didn't go with buying a replacement power supply.
Mon Nov 11 2024
Sleep 0515 to 1315 (8 hours)
- Worked on updating operating budget and sent it and reserve study to board with some explanations so they can look at it before Thursday's HOA meeting. Now I need to work on the cover letter.
Tue Nov 12 2024
Sleep 0015 to 0115, 0715 to 1315 (7 hours)
- Received my copy of Warlock Knight (a Dungeon Fantasy solo adventure). The adventure is 56 pages (8"x10" booklet) with a 56-page monster book with all the monsters you fight. This reminds me that Douglas Cole of Gaming Ballistic said he has to revert the company back to a part-time effort. Tough to make it a go as a real company with three obscure product lines: a D&D 5E setting, TFT adventures, Dungeon Fantasy supplements. It's also high quality products which must not help his margin.
Wed Nov 13 2024
Sleep 0030 to 0200, 0730 to 1415 (8-1/4 hours)
- There's a Humble Bundle for 7th Sea RPG but after reading this rpg.net thread I decided not to even consider buying it.
Thu Nov 14 2024
Sleep 2330 to 0245, 0830 to 1300 (7-3/4 hours)
- After a night working on some Reserve Study changes I backed Ars Magica Definitive Edition (physical copy for $150). BackerKit ends later today.
- Amazon shutting down Freevee. Not sure how this affects me. I watch Freevee using Amazon Prime Video app and I guess those shows will still be available in for free without Freevee branding and maybe with more commercials.
Fri Nov 15 2024
Sleep 0100 to 0630, 1200 to 1415 (7-3/4 hours)
- I bought the Mutants & Masterminds 3E bundle which is a coupon for all the books on DriveThruRPG. One thing I realized is that the order page which shows all the items you can download... For any given product only the first thirty items are listed. Luckily you can go to the product page itself which lists all the items and you can download them individually. Matters because Emerald City and Hero High both have lots of Hero Lab (I assume) individual files whereas other products zips them up into one file.
MacBook Pro M4 Pro Options
Nov 14 2024
Given that I'm now ok with a 512 GB SSD, since I'm putting my home directory and games on an external drive, what MacBook Pro M4 options are there? Almost all sales are for stock models, which are the ones you pick on the Apple Store with Select which then allows you to configure further.
MBP 14" M4 Pro 12/16 24 GB Memory/512 GB SSD ($2000) - Used to be that the lowest end M3 Pro also had slightly less good internals (e.g. memory bandwidth or number and type of ports). Not the case anymore. M4 Pro no matter the version have the same specs and even 16" MBP doesn't get better other than the display itself. Now, if you go to an M4 you get Thunderbolt 4 instead of Thunderbolt 5 (and less memory bandwidth) and if you go with an M4 Max you can have four external displays instead of just two.
One thing I realized is that MBP have three Thunderbolt, an HDMI, and a MagSafe 3 port which is effectively one more usable port than my Intel MBP where the four Thunderbolt ports are used for power, usb hub, and two displays. With a MBP M4 I'll have an extra Thunderbolt port which I can use to directly connect an external SSD drive.
MBP 14" M4 Pro 14/20 24 GB Memory/1 TB SSD ($2400) - The upper of affordable. Better CPU and more SSD space, though I guess at this point I'd rather have more memory than SSD but not an option for stock configurations.
MBP 16" M4 Pro 14/20 48 GB Memory/512 GB SSD ($2900) - For stock config you have to go to 16" to get 48 GB memory. Rather pricey upgrade so pretty much out of the question.
Nov 20: Bought the low end MBP 14" M4 Pro 12/16 24 GB Memory/512 GB SSD for $1750 at B&H Foto and Electronics. Also bought a Samsung T7 4TB for $285 which is the same price as on Amazon. Total with tax $2235.

My MBP Storage Usage
Nov 12 2024
My current MBP has an 8 TB internal SSD and a major reason it cost over $6k (I also have maxed out 64 GB RAM). New MBP will have less SSD space so what can I offload? Taking a look at disk usage via OmniDiskSweeper:
/Library (77.6 GB)
/Library/Application Support/com.apple.idleassetsd/... (50.0 GB) - This is 99% from desktop wallpaper videos
/Library/Application Support/Logic (15.3 GB) - I guess these are from GarageBand?
/System (28.1 GB) - of which 620 MB in Applications, 17.2 GB in Library/AssetsV2 for XCode stuff
/Applications (200.3 GB)
/Applications/Games (164.3 GB) - I try to put all my games here
/Applications/Games/Epic Games (115.2 GB) - mostly Borderlands 3
/Applications/Games/GOG (36.4 GB) - mostly BattleTech
/Applications/Games/League of Legends (12.7 GB)
You can change the install location for Epic Games and GOG are manual installs so both can be moved to an external drive.
/private (8.1 GB)
/user (4.7 GB) - mostly HomeBrew installs
So outside my home folder it's about 119 GB of non-games. I can see why 256 GB SSD would be fine for people who don't have much in their home folders.
/Users/(me) (2.8 TB)
/Users/(me)/Movies (1.2 TB) - This is all stuff in TV app. Lots of stuff ripped from DVDs so not cloud-based. Could offload all this so 1.6 TB left.
/Users/(me)/Virtual Machines (340.7 GB) - VMWare VMs which I never use so can remove. Down to 1.26 TB.
/Users/(me)/Documents (629.1 GB)
-- Books (348 GB) - I could offload comics at 337.1 GB. Down to 930 GB.
/Users/(me)/Music (210.4 GB) - I have lots of ripped CD music + podcasts. Noticed GarageBand recording file is 47 GB so I guess when recording a gaming session it can get quite big.
/Users/(me)/Library (205.2 GB)
-- Application Support/CrossOver (31.5 GB) - CrossOver you can set install location so can move.
-- Steam (24.9 GB) - Steam you can also set a different install location
-- Moving the two above we're down to (874 GB)
/Users/(me)/Downloads (124.5 GB) - I use the Downloads folder for temporary work which is why it's so big. I guess can move to an external drive. Down to 700 GB.
/Users/(me)/Trash (56.2 GB) - obviously can remove so 644 GB.
/Users/(me)/Sites (37.8 GB) - local copy of my web site. Can offload so down to 606 GB.
/Users/(me)/Public (10.5 GB) - huh, this is Raid Shadow Legends and I should delete now. 596 GB.
Hmm. So I'm finding out a 1 TB SSD would be a bit cramped. Upgrading from 1 TB to 2 TB SSD is $400.
An alternative is an external fast SSD and putting my home folder there. I'd have a second user on my internal SSD mostly for boot up in case I don't have my external SSD. A different account using same Apple ID so can use cloud documents.
Samsung T7 4 TB ($286) with USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) or T9 4 TB ($300) with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (though from what I read MBPs don't support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and instead should use a USB 4 drive).
T7 Performance Benchmark is in the 800+ MB for read/write of large files and I'm used to 30 to 40 MB/s with USB 2 drives so even a somewhat old USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection will be very fast and hopefully usable as a home folder.
/Library (77.6 GB)
/Library/Application Support/com.apple.idleassetsd/... (50.0 GB) - This is 99% from desktop wallpaper videos
/Library/Application Support/Logic (15.3 GB) - I guess these are from GarageBand?
/System (28.1 GB) - of which 620 MB in Applications, 17.2 GB in Library/AssetsV2 for XCode stuff
/Applications (200.3 GB)
/Applications/Games (164.3 GB) - I try to put all my games here
/Applications/Games/Epic Games (115.2 GB) - mostly Borderlands 3
/Applications/Games/GOG (36.4 GB) - mostly BattleTech
/Applications/Games/League of Legends (12.7 GB)
You can change the install location for Epic Games and GOG are manual installs so both can be moved to an external drive.
/private (8.1 GB)
/user (4.7 GB) - mostly HomeBrew installs

Sleep 2345 to 0100, 0745 to 1400 (7-1/2 hours)
Sleep 0500 to 1100 (6 hours)
- C3 day: played Cora Quest, went to Cold Stone, dinner from a Hawaiian BBQ place
- Went to Instagram settings and turned off push notifications. Some were already off from the last time I did this but 2/3rds were not so must be new preferences that they default to on. Sheesh.
Sun Nov 03 2024
Sleep 0530 to 1200 (6-1/2 hours)
- My printer, a Brother HL-L2350DW started warning about low toner (starter toner and I got almost 400 pages in 23 months). With the low warning it doesn't like printing more than one page at a time.
Mon Nov 04 2024
Sleep 0200 to 0700, 1-1/2 hour nap (6-1/2 hours)
- Printer ran out of toner (it's been warning for a couple of months but I use sparingly, only today I wanted to print 90+ pages of stuff). Went to Office Depot and got a TN730 which is 1200 pages so will probably last me years.
- Actually the printer now that it's happy with new toner still won't print too many pages at once. It only has 64 MB memory so maybe that's a problem. It seems like macOS wants to push the whole document at once rather than in small chunks so that the printer can handle it. Not a huge problem and I guess it's more macOS's fault than the printer's fault.
Tue Nov 05 2024
Sleep 0630 to 1415 (7-3/4 hours)
- Here's the thing. I was getting political ad emails. I clicked unsubscribe link. Democratic political emails stop. Republican political emails increase. There's a certain lack of respect of people from the Republican political campaigners.
- Actually I'm not sure my shaver is charging either so maybe it's the power cable that's broken. It's a specific charger plug with a cable with a special connector. I looked in the Braun site but a series 8 replacement charger and cable looks like the connector changed.
- How Much Mac RAM Do You Need? I think that 32/36 GB should be great for me. Maybe a little too much but that's better than a little too low.
Wed Nov 06 2024
Sleep 0130 to 1030 (9 hours)
- Did the Air Pods hearing test. Little to no hearing loss. I know I've had hearing loss so it'd be nice to compare when I had good hearing but I guess there's a baseline record now.
Thu Nov 07 2024
Sleep 0230 to 1100 (8-1/2 hours)
- Trump is President Elect. San Mateo measure T probably passed. Official certification is next month.
Fri Nov 08 2024
Sleep 2345 to 0100, 0745 to 1400 (7-1/2 hours)
- Dave S back from Tibet though very jetlagged so CSr, DW and I played DDO. Working on Legendary Feywild at Reaper 6.
Corsairs of Cthulhu Bundle
Nov 07 2024
Corsairs of Cthulhu Bundle of Holding is a small $8 bundle of four CoC 7E books from New Comet Games.
Corsairs of Cthulhu: Fighting the Mythos in the Golden Age of Piracy - 229 page "campaign sourcebook set in the Caribbean, 1650-1730." Includes an "epic 12-part campaign "The Astronomer's Map" your Spanish galleon sails from the high seas of the Caribbean to the South Pacific."
A Time for Sacrifice - 174 page campaign of "five linked adventures set among the Mayan ruins of Central and South America."
Devil's Swamp - 190 page adventure collection. "Set in the classic 1920s era, these eight adventures for beginning or experienced Investigators can be run as standalone scenarios or as a campaign. You are a member of the Bridgewater Preservation Society near the Hockomock Swamp in southern Massachusetts..."
The Star on the Shore - 99 page sandbox module "set in 1921, the setting blends fiction with history drawn from two years of research... What dark secret writhes at the heart of picturesque Rockport on the New England coast?"
Rather specific books and other than the last one they might be hard to fit into a given CoC campaign. Still it's only $8 so worth buying.

- Podcasts on my iPhone (I don't use it on my other devices) has been acting weird. Twice in the last couple of weeks it has marked a bunch of podcasts as watched and sometimes it doesn't list an unwatched episode in the Latest Episodes list (which I have set to view all unplayed). Might be a syncing thing when I backup to my Mac but I haven't noticed a pattern yet.
- PayPal asking me to add Passkey login, which I did a while ago. Guess it's just a blind email sent to all.
Sun Oct 27 2024

- Heard DS is on his way back from Nepal. Stuck at the airport there, maybe.
- Gloomhaven. My rat guy reached level 8 so it's trying to concentrate on his story plot and then retire him.
