Wheel of Time and More Dynamite Bundle

Humble Bundle for Dynamite Wheel of Time comics and other comics. For $18 you get:

Interesting Comics

Swords of the Swashbucklers (1985) - TPB of a 12-issue series about a teen girl who ends up becoming a member of a space pirate crew.

Swashbucklers: The Saga Continues (2018) - TPB of a 5-issue sequel series

Jungle Girl Omnibus (2007) - This is the 2020 "Complete" Omnibus with Jungle Girl s1-3 (2007-2015). I have the older Omnibus which only has s1-2.

Savage Tales (2017) #1-10 - Resurrecting the Savage Tales anthologies brand from Marvel Comics. The old series featured at least one Conan story (or part of a story) per issue. This one features Red Sonja instead.

Savage Tales: Vampirella OS (2018) - a Vampirella story with swords and sorcery motif.

Savage Tales OS (2022) - A one-shot of four stories.

Savage Tales: Winter Special OS (2022) - A one-shot of four stories.

Athena (2009) [OWN] - TPB of a 4-issue series. The goddess Athena is reborn in the modern world.

The Complete Alice in Wonderland (2009) [OWN] - TPB of a 4-issue adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and the Lost chapter.

Legendary Tailspinners (2010) - TPB of a 3-issue series. In a world where fairy tales have died out a young woman is visited by Baron Munchausen and taken on a series of fairy-tale adventures.

Prophecy (2012) - TPB of a 7-issues series. Dynamite crossover series with Vampirella, Red Sonja, Eva (Dracula's daughter), Athena (the goddess reborn) and others.

Damsels (2012) v1 - TPB of issues 1-8. Various fairy tale princesses band together for an adventure.

Damsels (2012) v2 - TPB of issues 9-13.

Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure (2014) [OWN] - TPB of a 7-issue series. Re-casting Dynamite heroes and heroines in a steampunk world.

Legenderry Green Hornet (2015) - TPB of a 5-issue series.

Legenderry Vampirella (2015) [OWN] - TPB of a 5-issue series.

Precinct (2015) - TPB of a 5-issue series. Police procedural set in the Legenderry universe (I think). A veteran cop and a lady alchemist team up to solve a crime.

Lords of the Jungle (2016) - TPB of a 6-issue series. Tarzan and Sheena team-up story.

Sheena: Queen of the Jungle (2017) v1 - TPB of Sheena (2017) issues 0-5. "In this riveting relaunch, the guardian of the jungle, SHEENA, pursues a mysterious invader that has come to spy on the Amazon's most ancient secrets"

Sheena: Queen of the Jungle (2017) v2 - TPB of issues 6-10. End of series until relaunch in 2021.

Robots vs Princesses (2018) - TPB of a 4-issue series. "When plucky Princess Zara stumbles upon the Decimator defector Wheeler, she sets in motion events that will pit the spritely cleverness of fairy tale princesses against the raw power of giant robots!"

Other Comics

Street Magick GN (2006) - "New York is a place of magik; not the fairy tale kind, but hard magik, dangerous magik - Street Magik"

Warlord of Mars Omnibus v1 (2010) - collects issues 1-8. Earthman John Carter ends up on Mars and has adventures.

Lord of the Jungle v1 (2011) - TPB of issues 1-8. Tarzan in his original form based on the original stories so a bit more graphic than present Tarzan depictions.

Lord of the Jungle v1 (2011) - TPB of issues 9-15.

Thunda (2012) - TPB of a 5-issue series. After a helicopter crash an amnesiac special forces soldier who wakes up in a lost world of dinosaurs.

Lords of Mars (2013) - TPB of a 6-issue series. Tarzan and John Carter team up adventure.

The Greatest Adventure (2017) - TPB of a 9-issue series featuring a bunch of Edgar Rice Burroughs characters (e.g. Tarzan and John Carter).

Wheel of Time: New Spring (2005) #1-8 - adaptation of the prequel novel/series.

Wheel of Time (2010) #1-35. The complete series. (Humble Bundle lists issue #1.5 as a separate entry. Also mis-listed Legendary Tailspinners as Legenderry Tailspinners. Editing budget non-existent.)

Even though I already own some of this I guess there's enough interesting stuff to buy for $18.

Bundle of Holding - Atomic Robo

Atomic Robo is a FATE-based RPG with a bit of Buckaroo Banzai inspiration (among others). In the revived Atomic Robo Bundle for $25 you get:

Atomic Robo RPG
Majestic 12 - a different org to base campaigns on

Graphic Novels
- Atomic Robo and Other Strangeness
- The Ghost of Station X
- The Shadow From Beyond Time
- The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur
- The Ring of Fire
- The Temple of Od
- The Spectre of Tomorrow
- The Flying She-Devils in Raid on Marauder Island
- The Nicodemus Job

Rules-less Background Material
- Tesladyne Field Guide
- FM-Ultra Field Manual
- Dr. Dinosaur's Time Travel Guide

The two RPG items are all that's been published so this is not so much an RPG line as an RPG with a fiction line. Rather uninteresting since I already have Atomic Robo RPG so only Majestic 12 is of interest to me.

2023-08-31 Addendum: Oh. The comics came first and the RPG is an adaptation. In which case the bundle seems more reasonable to me. (Gaming fiction usually not that great. It takes good fiction for people to make adaptations.)

Diary - Aug 19 to Aug 25 2023

Sat Aug 19 2023

Sleep 0400 to 1130. (7-1/2 hours)

Sun Aug 20 2023

Sleep 0415 to 1145. (7-1/2 hours)

  • AirPods Max after 2-1/2 months still working great. After a night walk when I come back sweaty I've checked behind the earpieces (you can take them out easily as they're magnetically attached) it's still dry. I recall doing that with the old unit and there was moisture even droplets of sweat rolling around. Maybe that moisture eventually cause the original problems.

Mon Aug 21 2023

Sleep 0600 to 1200. (6 hours)

Tue Aug 22 2023

Sleep 0230 to 1199. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Watching the Aug 11 Giants vs Rangers game. The Giants had a pitcher pitch the first inning then switched to second pitcher for the regular part of the game. I searched around but can't tell if that's something their doing regularly (i.e. use a reliever in the first since starting pitchers tend to get banged early, then let the starter warm up with the latter half of the lineup).

Wed Aug 23 2023

Sleep 0330 to 1130. (8 hours)

Thu Aug 24 2023

Sleep 0630 to 1315. (6-3/4 hours)

  • Car Warriors: The Autoduel Chronicles GameLit Fiction KS. This is to help fund the next two Car Wars fiction novels. The $20 eBook bundle I guess is best: the three novels in the trilogy (first novel was published a month or three ago) and an anthology book. But this is pretty much the regular price and the stretch goals are mostly new add-ons you can pay for. So there is no reason to back this unless you support the project (and the books were already going to be made anyway I think).

Fri Aug 25 2023

Sleep 0330 to 0930. 1 hour nap. (7 hours)

  • DDO: Temple of the Deathwyrm raid on Normal took us 86 min (plus 15 to 20 minutes getting the quest and getting to the raid entrance). We had done it before and but not able to finish final fight. This time it really helps to have Bard buffs so we can stay healed up.

Humble Bundle - Seanan McGuire Urban Fantasy Bundle

This Seanan McGuire bundle includes books on two of her series:

√ Discount Armageddon
√ Midnight Blue-Light Special
√ Half-Off Ragnarok
√ Pocket Apocalypse
√ Chaos Choreography
√ Magic for Nothing
√ Tricks for Free
√ That Ain't Witchcraft

So all books except the last few in each series. 25 novels for $18. Not a fan of the genre but intrigued about female-protagonist stories. In the end decided not to get this bundle.

I don't own any of the D&D 4.0 or 5.0 rules though I suppose you can get the SRDs. The only interesting items are the DCC RPG annuals and such. Eleven items retail is $75 for $25 bundle price is fairly nice. But I don't want a bunch of duplicate adventures and I have so many D&D-type adventures already. I'll pass.

Diary - Aug 12 to Aug 18 2023

Sat Aug 12 2023

Sleep 0230 to 0800. (5-1/2 hours)

  • Visiting parents with C3 and Steph. Lunch: three steamed Tilapias + sweet and sour shrimp. Dinner: Steph made lamb stew.
  • DDO: We finished Isle of Dread on Epic, first time through it. Except for raid. Guess we'll try a few raids before True Resurrection.

Sun Aug 13 2023

Sleep 0200 to 1200. (10 hours)

  • Lunch: arroz con pollo, dinner: won ton soup.
  • Driving home I was so tired. Started playing music and singing along which helped.

Mon Aug 14 2023

Sleep 0000 to 0500. 1200 to 1430. (7-1/2 hours)

Tue Aug 15 2023

Sleep 0315 to 1115. 30m nap. (8-1/2 hours)

  • PG&E Peak Day Event. No computer from 1600 to 1900. I napped, played on my iPad and watched some videos. Did get a bit dark.

Wed Aug 16 2023

Sleep 0600 to 1400. (8 hours)

  • Although T-Mobile reception is as good as AT&T in my apartment I've recently been in two places where reception is poor. On Sunday in Elk Grove shopping at an Asian market I tried to lookup stuff and it was fairly slow. Today at the parking lot of the Trader Joe's I go to I also wanted to use the Internet and it was slow again. Still able to get stuff done but I think slower than AT&T.
  • Second Peak Day though I was at C3's house.

Thu Aug 17 2023

Sleep 0430 to 1130. (7 hours)

  • Charles Schwab: we'll subscribe you to a bunch of different email lists, which you then have to unsubscribe individually. And there's still marketing stuff you can't unsubscribe from.
  • Also they keep cold calling me to set up an appointment for financial advice. Yeesh.

Fri Aug 18 2023

Sleep 0230 to 1030. (8 hours)

  • Banktivity dropping Cloud Sync for v7 (also dropping Stock Prices and Currency Exchange Rates but I don't use those). I still use v7 since it's the last that is not subscription-based. I'll miss syncing with iOS/iPad. (They do indicate you can subscribe for a year, not renew, and you'll connected services but can still use the app as normal.) For now I'll stick with v7.

DriveThruRPG Cosmic Horror Sale

Cosmic Horror Sale is a 25% off event for Mythos-type games (Call of Cthulhu being the prototypical example and 800 of the 2900 sale items are Chaosium products never mind CoC-compatible products).

The only things I found interesting and that I'll probably buy are

Goodman Games Gen Con 2016 Program Guide ($15 sale price) - for Metamorphosis Alpha material
Goodman Games Gen Con 2017 Program Guide ($9.75 sale price) - for completeness

Although now that I write it down they're really pricey considering what I'll end up (maybe) using, so then again maybe pass.

There are basically three good RPGs in the sale: Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Alien. If I had $50 I think I'd spend it on Alien since it's science fiction.

Alien RPG Core Rulebook ($18.75 sale price)
Colonial Marines Operations Manual ($15 sale price) - to run a military campaign

Three published adventures but they're linked so I don't particularly want to buy only one ($34 for 3 PDF scenarios...).

Bundle of Holding Hyperborea 3E

This is a small bundle for the latest Hyperborea 3E RPG (née Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea).

For $13 you get

Hyperborea 3E v1: Player's Manual ($12, currently $9 on sale)
Hyperborea 3E v2: Referee's Manual ($12, currently $9 on sale)
Atlas of Hyperborea ($5, currently $3.75 on sale) - 40 pages
The Late Trapper's Lament ($10, currently $7.50 on sale) - 1st and 2nd level adventure
Hyperborea Referee Screen ($10, currently $7.50 on sale, already own) - this is the 2E screen, though I guess fully compatible with 3E

For me it's $28 worth of material so a good discount.

Diary - Aug 05 to Aug 11 2023

Sat Aug 05 2023

Sleep 0445 to 1430. (9-3/4 hours)

Sun Aug 06 2023

Sleep 0630 to 1345. (7-1/4 hours)

  • Sweden beats USA 0-0 (5-4) in FIFA Women's World Cup. Oof. Knocked out in the Round of 16.

Mon Aug 07 2023
Sleep 1815 to 2045. (2-1/2 hours)

  • Oops. Stayed up 28 hours straight.

Tue Aug 08 2023

Sleep 0330 to 1030. (7 hours)

  • Leagues Cup. The concept of MLS taking a break 2/3rds of the way through the season to spend a month playing a tournament vs Liga MX (Mexico's tier 1 league) seems so weird.

Wed Aug 09 2023

Sleep 0445 to 1315. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Dinner at C3's. Delicious leftovers.
  • DDO: Chris and I we reached level 20.

Thu Aug 10 2023

Sleep 0415 to 1145. (7-1/2 hours)

  • League Cup. There are times as I'm watching when it's like, yeah the Mexican teams are much better than the American teams. Still, 20 of 29 MLS teams and 12 of 18 Liga MX teams made it to knockout stage so similar percentage made it past group stage.

Fri Aug 11 2023

Sleep 0700 to 1100, 30 min nap. (4-1/2 hours)

  • MLS is doing Leagues Cup with one of the Mexican leagues. A lot of free games on Apple TV+ though not after knockout stages begin, which is fine because I'm way behind. I'll be lucky to finish watching the games before the regular MLS season resumes Sun Aug 20.
  • Clever marketing that none of the Miami games were free so people who want to see Lionel Messi needed to subscribe to MLS+.

$100 Vampire the Masquerade (cWoD) Recommendation

I'm not as familiar with Vampire the Masquerade but the 20th Anniversary Edition is so cool let's build a recommended list.

Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition ($22.50 PDF)

This is the old VtM Revised Edition (i.e. 3E) plus one of the big clan supplements and at 529 pages it's very big.

V20 didn't really do any adventures, just big splatbook supplements, so we go back to Revised adventure supplements.

Chicago Chronicles v1 ($7.50 PDF) - Chicago by Night 1E + The Succubus Club
Chicago Chronicles v2 ($7.50 PDF) - Chicago by Night 2E + Under a Blood Red Moon
Chicago Chronicles v3 ($6.75 PDF) - Milwaukee by Night + Ashes to Ashes + Blood Bond

These three volumes reprint several previous supplements and adventures. You get a bunch of setting and some adventures comprising the War for Chicago.

Dust to Dust ($5.25 PDF) - "a spiritual successor to the classic story Ashes to Ashes"
Gehenna ($15 PDF) - For completeness, the book that ends the VtM Revised line with various vampire apocalypses.

That's $64.50 and I'm not sure there is more to buy.

Giovanni Chronicles 1-4 ($24.75 PDF) is set in Renaissance (to eventually modern times). Transylvania Chronicles 1-4 ($29.25 PDF) is also interesting as an 800-year campaign leading to Gehenna. I guess these two campaigns showcase vampiric immortality allowing PCs to be there participating in history. Not really my style though.

Of the two I think Transylvania Chronicles would be more interesting to run as a second campaign after a modern-day Chicago campaign, so:

Transylvania Chronicles I: Dark Tides Rising ($7.50 PDF)
Transylvania Chronicles II: Son of the Dragon ($6.75 PDF)
Transylvania Chronicles III: Ill Omens ($7.50 PDF)
Transylvania Chronicles IV: The Dragon Ascendant ($7.50 PDF)

Bringing it to $93.75.

D&D Campaign - Adventure Modules

I probably won't be running every D&D adventure. Thinking about it a bit this is the minimum I'd like to run, based heavily on stuff that is in D&D Online (yeah, mostly AD&D rather than D&D modules but I can adapt them fairly easily as it's a matter of deleting/simplifying rather than adding).

B2 The Keep on the Borderlands (D&D lvl 1-3)

FRQ1 Haunted Halls of Eveningstar (AD&D 2E lvl 1-3)

U1 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (AD&D lvl 1-3)
U2 Danger at Dunwater (AD&D lvl 1-4)
U3 The Final Enemy (AD&D lvl 3-5)

X1 The Isle of Dread (D&D lvl 3-7)

T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil (AD&D lvl 1-8)

A0 Danger at Darkshelf Quarry (AD&D lvl 1-3)
A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity (AD&D lvl 4-7)
A2 Secret of the Slavers Stockade (AD&D lvl 4-7)
A3 Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords (AD&D lvl 4-7)
A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords (AD&D lvl 4-7)

I6 Ravenloft (AD&D lvl 5-7)
I10 Ravenloft II: The House on Gryphon Hill (AD&D lvl 8-10)

S2 White Plume Mountain (AD&D lvl 5-10)

DA1 Adventures in Blackmoor (D&D lvl 10-14)
DA2 The Temple of the Frog (D&D lvl 10-14)
DA3 City of the Gods (D&D lvl 10-14)
DA4 The Duchy of Ten (D&D lvl 10-14)

I kind of want to end with the Blackmoor adventures. They're set 3000 years in the past so a bit of a campaign reset or bring that setting forward. Anyways it's fantasy with science fiction elements.

Not sure how I'm using all this. One thing is that the current map uses the B1 dungeon so I should try to switch it out with FRQ1 or A0. Saltmarsh can be south-east of the Keep since there's a swamp there so I can have the sea over that-a-way and then X1 in the sea past the horizon.

A0, A4, I10 are optional since they didn't make it to DDO. Too many lvl 1-3 modules so A0 is out. Possibly the same for mid-levels so A4 is out (and it's a bit weird in that the PCs start out captured). I10 might be useful since we're very light on lvl 8-10 modules.

I think I want B2, U1-3, X1, and T1-4 as the core. ToEE can be switched out for B1. U1-3 is SE of B2 through the marshes. X1 I'm not sure how to fit in so that PCs will go there at the same time as they're doing T1-4. Maybe T1-4 will be a temple in the X1 island.

Diary - Jul 29 to Aug 04 2023

Sat Jul 29 2023

Sleep 0200 to 0800. (6 hours)

  • Dave W was sick so just CSr and I playing with our alt characters. They're up to level 15 and making good progress.

Sun Jul 30 2023

Sleep 0400 to 1330. (9-1/2 hours)

  • KFC for dinner. Mmm.

Mon Jul 31 2023

Sleep 0300 to 0400, 0930 to 1630. (8 hours)

  • Was thinking that my D&D initiative system was too cumbersome. Will try using playing cards a la Savage Worlds.

Tue Aug 01 2023

Sleep 0730 to 1445. (7-1/4 hours)

  • Humble Bundle Traveller Book Bundle is the current Core Book, 2 books of equipment, an area book (Glorious Empire), Pirates of Drinax and two companions, Reach Adventures 1-4, and three fiction books of unspecified length. I pretty much have all of this already but for $18 the core rules and Pirates of Drinax is months worth of gaming.

Wed Aug 02 2023

Sleep 0700 to 1300. (6 hours)

  • Dinner at C3. Noodleosophy beef soup with wide noodles. They don't seem to have dry noodle options any more or maybe it was just today.

Thu Aug 03 2023

Sleep 0200 to 1000. (8 hours)

  • Have to stop buying KFC tenders along with my chicken. By the time I'm done with the chicken, two or three days later, the tenders are pretty unappetizing even heated up. Fried chicken always good even cold. Or maybe I need to eat the tenders first...

Fri Aug 04 2023

Sleep 0530 to 0930. 1-1/4 hour nap. (5-1/4 hours)

  • Occasionally checking Dave S's progress. He passed California-Oregon border a few days ago, past Crater Lake, getting close to same parallel as Portland.

Current Pre-Orders

I don't have too many old pre-orders. I think I gave up on one or two Kickstarters and just resigned myself that I'll never receive the product. But here's what I'm currently waiting for:

Napoleon 1815 - pre-ordered May 2016 and the original book project (Napoleon's Last army) was changed to a 2E of Armies at Waterloo but then changed again to Napoleon 1815, a two-volume set. Dana Lombardy offered to refund me but I decided to leave my pre-order which I think will be v1 of the new book set. This will be "an English language study of the organization and composition of all the French Imperial armies of 1815." Current ETA is late 2023.

Black Madonna PDF for the latest Twilight: 2000 RPG. Kickstarter was Sep 2020 and everything else was delivered. One of the stretch goals was a new edition of the old Black Madonna adventure for the new system and I think that's still being worked on (there are like no updates for over a year).

Blue Planet: Recontact - May 2021 Kickstarter for a new edition of this RPG by the original authors. It's been slow but we get maybe quarterly updates and I think they're still in art/layout.

Hexcrawl Toolbox - Dec 2022 Kickstarter. This is a box with a bunch of pre-drawn hexes you can use to create a random hexcrawl map. I think includes a booklet for running a hexcrawl. I also bought their previous two hexcrawl kits, one for desert and one for sea. I think product is shipping in UK and will ship soon in USA.

Girl By Moonlight - Jun 2023 Backerkit. An RPG about magical girls using Forged in the Dark system (which is d6 dice pool take the highest die for result with critical success if multiple 6s rolled). I think still in development.

I have four MMP pre-orders. Unlike the above these are wargame pre-orders where they charge your credit card just before shipping (some wargame companies charge earlier).

  • SCS Ardennes II (Jan 2022) - Battle of the Bulge. Battalion scale with daily turns. Now shipping though haven't seen my credit card charged.
  • TCS Goose Green (Feb 2023) - I guess the biggest land battle during the Falklands War. Tactical scale (platoons).
  • OCS Crimea (May 2023) - WW2 Germans conquering the peninsula then the Soviets taking it back. Operational scale (regiments/battalions + supply)
  • BCS Valley of Tears (May 2023) - Yom Kippur War at the battalion scale.

FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Women's World Cup just finished the group stage.

USA underperformed to qualify for knockout. Now they face Sweden then Japan/Norway and Netherlands/Switzerland in order to reach the finals. Will be tough even though they came in as the tournament favorites.

I'm rooting for:

  1. USA (rank #1) - cause it's my country
  2. Colombia (rank #25) - South American bros
  3. Jamaica (rank #43) - CONCACAF bros
