I would really like to improve my metamagics but quite low on points for this tree. At least I can barely make it to Tier 4 for Phantasmal Killer which gives me two PK spell-likes.

Planning for my next Dungeons & Dragons Online reincarnation: Deep Gnome Iconic. The concept is specializing in Illusion (which means being really good with Phantasmal Killer) and Force (since Feydark Illusionist has some force spell-like abilities).

Let's spec out a Mac Studio setup. My last MBP I payed $7300 which included taxes (10% I think) and Apple Care. So let's say $6000 limit.

Mac Studio Display is $1600 right off, $2000 with adjustable height stand. Let's do that so that leaves $4000.

Guess no M1 Ultra setup, or it would be the base M1 Ultra with 48-core GPU (vs 64-core), 64 GB RAM (vs 128 GB) and 1 TB SSD (max 8 TB). So let's say that's option B.

Note that my current MBP has 64 GB RAM and the GPU has 8 GB. I'm generally not using all that much CPU RAM while I do tax the GPU so 64 GB shared memory would be an improvement I think.

M1 Max base with extra memory (to the max of 64 GB) and SSD (to 1 TB) is $2600. With upgraded to 32-core GPU (vs 24-core) and 4 TB SSD it's $3800. Option A.

Option A is (mostly) half the processing power but +3 TB SSD. Option B is the way to go if I can live with 1 TB internal storage. Currently I'm at 2 TB used with 1.1 TB in videos and 100 GB in music. Oh, 300 GB in downloads (from itch.io bundle I barely started downloading). So I could offload the video and be down to about 600 GB. A bit much but doable for 1 TB storage.

Looks like Option B is the way to go:

After Tuesday's Apple Even it's time to look at my current Apple products and when I want to replace them.


iPhone SE, bought Jun 2017. Replaced it via AppleCare Jun 2019 so the replacement is coming up on three years old. It's definitely showing it's age in terms of not being powerful enough to run the current iOS plus more than two or three apps.

iPad Pro, bought Sep 2017. I think I had a crack fixed on it but didn't have to replace the iPad. It's still running fine for me so have hopes of it making it to 2025.

iPad 5th generation was the cheapest when I bought it and is definitely slow today. But it was meant as a guest iPad though Kooma never visited.

Mac mini, bought Feb 2018 and it was the old 2014 model. I will run this into the ground since I only use it as a simple web server. Possibly if I install Confluence or Foundry VTT and find it runs slow then I'll think of upgrading. But I'm running macOS server, the last version that had a web server built-in so don't really want to spend the time replacing it.

MacBook Pro bought Jun 2020 and one of the last Intel ones. Even though I maxed it out it does seem a bit slow sometimes but I think half of it is that a slow network connection seems to make everything slow.


Late 2023: iPhone SE 128 GB, $480 - At this point the new iPhone SE will be a year out and any hardware issues fixed.

I'm looking forward to watching MLB. The iPhone SE looks nice for when I need to replace my current iPhone.

Not sure what differentiates an iPad Air from the smaller iPad Pro. The 32 GB model might be too small but the 256 GB model is too big -- I use about 100 GB on my current iPad Pro with some amount of media files there but most media I watch streaming nowadays. So the 256 MB for $750 looks like a good replacement iPad if I had to do replace it today.

Mac Studio is pretty impressive, especially the M1 Ultra version. Once again brings up dreams of using a Mac mini-like as my main with monitors at home and work for docking into. And if I could set up an iPad with a mouse/keyboard and remote desktop and if it was fast enough I could play DDO at my parent's place without bringing a Mac and monitor.

The Studio Display brings back an Apple not-really-affordable display (Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display was $1k though 1/4th the resolution). At least it's not a $5k Pro Display XDR and the Studio Display may be ideal for Twitch streaming (a camera that automatically keeps you centered as you move around is nice). Hopefully the built-in mics are good. Speaker system I've never seen work well on streams and usually streamer has to wear headphones.

• Humble Bundle for comics can be a bit misleading. Some items are trade paperbacks (which are generally four to six comics books) and some items are the the individual issues (still comprising the full TPB) which pads the count and makes the bundle seem bigger than it is.
