Diary - Dec 19 to Dec 25 2020

Sat Dec 19 2020

Sleep 0900 to 1145. 1930 to 2100. (4-1/4 hours)

  • Short Gloom session to finish out the last adventure. Christopher and I leveled up.

Sun Dec 20 2020

Sleep 0515 to 1500. (9-3/4 hours)

  • Poker night with Twitch friends. Unfortunately I died after three or four rounds going all-in at a bad time.

Mon Dec 21 2020

Sleep 01:45 to 05:15, 1545 to 1745 (5-1/2 hours)

  • HOA assessments went up $12 to $587 per month.

Tue Dec 22 2020

Sleep 0130 to 0900. (7-1/2 hours)

  • Drilling from (I think) sewer work on N El Camino is a bit annoying.
  • Trader Joe's for Christmas meal stuff.

Wed Dec 23 2020 Sleep 0200 to 0830. (6-1/2 hours)

  • Actually the drilling is on my street. Several areas but right outside my patio is one.
  • Tiffany's Sterling Silver and 24k Gold Vermeil Chess Set, $75k. People were making fun of it because it's made to look like cardboard, but I think it'll look great IRL and it's sterling silver and gold!

Thu Dec 24 2020

Sleep 0130 to 0730. (6 hours)

  • Got KFC. Half for today. Half for tomorrow.

Fri Dec 25 2020

Sleep 0230 to 1030, 1 hour evening nap (9 hours)

  • Had an ok Christmas dinner and chilled.

Christmas Dinner

Since I'm along this year I had to think of something special. Was going with:

Traditional Meatloaf
Mashed Potatoes
Vegetables

All from Trader Joe's. But unfortunately they were out of the first two so I did:

KFC chicken tenders
KFC mashed potatoes and gravy
Trader Joe's roasted vegetables

It was ok.

Updating Steam Wish List

Since it's Christmas it's time to update my Steam Wishlist. There's also having a sale so I'll try to keep to a few $10 and under games.

Particle Fleet: Emergence ($1.50, 90% off) Design particle-based ships and fight them out in a physics simulator.

Battlevoid: Harbinger ($2, 80% off) Somewhat like FTL but you control a small fleet instead of one ship.

Undertale ($4, 60% off) RPG. I saw Dexbonus play this through twice (I think first time you beat it you're allowed to redo it and play it totally differently).

West of Loathing ($6.50, 40% off) Stick figure wild west RPG.

Bomber Crew ($3, 80% off) Cartoony simulator. Assemble a bomber crew and have them survive missions.

Diary - Dec 12 to Dec 18 2020

Sat Dec 12 2020

Sleep 0500 to 1100. 1 hour nap. (7 hours)

  • We skipped DDO last night and again tonight. Gave me a chance to relax and watch 1917.

Sun Dec 13 2020

Sleep 0430 to 1230. 1815 to 1915. (9 hours)

  • 49ers lose again with Mullens giving up a couple of turnovers for TDs. Now 5-8.

Mon Dec 14 2020

Sleep 0330 to 0415. 1030 to 1500. (5-1/4 hours)

  • Electoral College certified Biden's victory.

Tue Dec 15 2020

Sleep 0230 to 1130. (9 hours)

  • Installed Steam on a Win 7 CrossOver bottle then used Steam to install Serial Cleaner. Wasn't accepting keyboard input and not sure if anything I did changed anything but after a couple of restarts it started working. Have played 10 levels and it works fine.

Wed Dec 16 2020

Sleep 0600 to 1400. (8 hours)

  • County to go on lockdown at Dec 17 2359 for 3 weeks. I wasn't visiting family anyways and we're still work from home at Oracle. So the effect for me is can't dine at a restaurant or getting a haircut.

Thu Dec 17 2020

Sleep 0200 to 0345.

  • Bundle of Holding: Savage Explorer Essentials. It's for the previous version of Savage Worlds and lots of supplements plus four settings. But lack of adventures so I'll pass.
  • Bundle of Holding: Savage Rifts. Palladium's Rifts setting adapted to Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. More supplements made for Rifts than I expected but only one adventure in the bundle. I think I'll pass on this too.
  • Bundle of Holding: Modern Age and the Expanse RPG. The basics are Modern Age RPG and the advanced is Expanse RPG, which is standalone and does not require Modern Age. I'm not really in the mood to buy an RPG I don't need to get to the good stuff.

Fri Dec 18 2020

Sleep 0345 to 1130.

  • Since we made our milestone working the last six-plus weekends we get four extra days off and then winter break.
  • I do have one task left which I'll probably do Sunday.
  • So for my DDO expansion purchase you have to enter the key in the in-game DDO store. Latest expansion and newer will auto-register based on your logged-in store account at time of purchase.

Humble Bundle - Winter Indie Mix

The Winter Indie Mix bundle is a bit better than the last one. For me it's $1 for a $2 game or $6 for 3 games totaling $6. Felix the Reaper I've looked at before and it looked interesting but once again I'll skill the bundle.

$1 Level

Deponia: The Complete Journey (Owned, macOS 32-bit, $3) - puzzle story game like King's Quest
Lyne ($2) - puzzle game
Butcher (Owned, macOS 32-bit, $2) - side-view shooter

$6 Level

Cat Quest ($1) - action rpg where you play an anthropomorphic cat
Feather (Windows, $6) - multiplayer exploration game where you fly around as a bird
Felix the Reaper ($3) - 3d puzzle game where you have to stay in the shadows

$10 Level

Cryofall (Windows, $6) - adventure, survival, crafting game set on an interstellar colony
Armello (Owned, $8) - adventure board game

Humble Bundle - Québec Indies

Québec Indies bundle is one of the rare ones that only has one game that I both don't have and can run on my Mac without emulation. And at the $10 level Castle Story would cost more than just straight out buying it (Steam is having their holiday sale which is why most of the games are sale price).

$1 Level

Leap of Fate (Windows, $5 on sale) - cyberpunk rogue-like set in a NYC where magic is real
Aeolis Tournament (macOS 32-bit, $15) - 8-player party games
Toto Temple Deluxe (Windows, $10) - local multiplayer king-of-the-hill, steal the McGuffin and keep it for as long as possible

$7 Level

Light Fall (macOS 32-bit, $4 on sale) - 2d platformer
Jotun: Valhalla Edition (owned, $3 on sale) - Norse mythology-based adventure game
Crew 167: The Grand Block Odyssey (Windows, $4 on sale) - man alone on a spaceship starts hallucinating
Epic Manager - Create Your Own Adventuring Agency! (macOS 32-bit, $6 on sale) - sports management + JRPG
Knight Squad (macOS 32-bit, $3 on sale) - 8-player arena games

$10 Level

Castle Story ($7 on sale) - RTS castle building game
Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation (macOS 32-bit, $4 on sale) - cooperative board game
Mages of Mystralia (Windows, $5 on sale) - adventure game
Speed Brawl (Windows, $8 on sale) - 2d brawler

Diary - Dec 05 to Dec 11 2020

Sat Dec 05 2020

Sleep 0630 to 1500. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Changing my Standing Stone Games password took so long because, although it says special characters are allowed, apparently it's not all special characters.

Sun Dec 06 2020

Sleep 0830 to 1530. (7 hours)

  • Central and South California going on lockdown again (less than 15% ICU capacity). Most of the Bay Area is voluntarily following suit, except for San Mateo County which is at 60% ICU space left so they decided not to lock down.

Mon Dec 07 2020

Sleep 0745 to 1515. (7-1/2 hours)

  • 49ers lose to Buffalo at "home". California is not allowing contact sports as of last week so the 49ers had to play in Arizona.

Tue Dec 08 2020

Sleep 0400 to 0900. 1630 to 1730. (6 hours)

  • Creeper World 4 is out. I fondly remember playing I think the first one and then the third one not so much though it was still good. Four is Windows only so won't be playing it.
  • Airpods Max. I think this has a wireless mic too. $550 but very tempted to buy. Oh, but it requires macOS Big Sur 11.1+. Sadge.
  • Every time I get a State Farm mail advertisement I think "hey, that company that tried to screw my parents". Not a good look State Farm, not a good look.

Wed Dec 09 2020

Sleep 0430 to 1315. (8-3/4 hours)

Thu Dec 10 2020

Sleep 0430 to 1130. (7 hours)

  • Ok, I feel fine today.
  • GOG: Warlords I + 2 ($3) and Warlords 3: Darklords Rising ($3). Both on sale 50% off. Warlords 3 is Windows but I bought it for completeness.

Fri Dec 11 2020

Sleep 0630 to 1415. 45 min nap. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Shower, then Trader Joe's and Safeway. Finally I'm awake at night but we cancelled DDO. Guess I'll try to sleep a bit early.

Nikola Stojsin Leaves Twitch

(Written on Dec 21 2020)

Longtime chess stream supporter Nikola Stojsin made a short farewell stream today. After his third attempt to get Twitch Partner he's fed up with the process and is leaving forever, or at least until there are fundamental changes in Twitch. This means that he won't be funding lots of various streamer chess matches and events and in general gift giving to the tune of $200k per year.

He has his client-facing statistics of the numbers he's been pulling and at face value they satisfy Twitch Partner requirements. But if he looked around he'd have realized that those requirements numbers are out of date and although not public from experience people speculate that you need to pull in far higher numbers to be made partner (unless there are other considerations). He also compared the process as being very opaque and much like the Communist government he grew up with, though here again I think most big companies B-to-B companies (and I think Twitch - Twitch Partner relationship is more B-to-B than B-to-C) have processes that are hard to fathom.

I did not realize what he was trying to do with setting up a Twitch channel and promoting Open Field Media. Perhaps, even though he owns an IT company, the way he was going about bringing corporate sponsorship to chess events was a bit too old fashioned. Streamers work on getting their own sponsorships, they shouldn't depend on a third party to bring them sponsorships as a sort of goodwill gesture (versus hiring a manager who can get you sponsorships but then you're paying a manager to do that).

It is sad to see him go, though a bit weird to leave in a "I'm taking my ball home" way.

Humble Bundle - W40K: Black Crusade and Only War

This is the last Humble Bundle and almost completes the FFG W40K books (except Death Watch although maybe I missed that bundle).

Black Crusade and Only War were the last two W40K RPGs produced. Each got 8 books plus a Free RPG Day adventure. Like the other W40K bundles I'm not sure you can buy these on DTRPG or Cubicle 7.

The way they have it set up you have to buy the $18 tier to complete one line, which also completes the other line. Anyway, definitely buying this one.

BC01 Black Crusade Core Rulebook
BC02 Black Crusade: The Game Master's Kit
BC03 Hand of Corruption
BC04 The Tome of Fate
BC05 The Tome of Blood
BC06 The Tome of Excess
BC07 The Tome of Decay
BC08 Binding Contracts
BCP1 Broken Chains (Free RPG Day)
IG01 Only War Core Rulebook
IG02 Only War: The Game Master's Kit
IG03 Final Testament
IG04 Hammer of the Emperor
IG05 Enemies of the Imperium
IG06 No Surrender
IG07 Shield of Humanity
IG14 Salvaging Solace
IGP1 Eleventh Hour (Free RPG Day)

Diary - Nov 28 to Dec 04 2020

Sat Nov 28 2020

Sleep 0630 to 1230. 2000 to 2100. (7 hours)

  • Received Turning Point Simulations' 21st (bonus) game, We Are All Mortal, about the Cuban Missile Crisis. The series did a game for each of the battles in the book Twenty Decisive Battles of the World but that ended in WWII (Stalingrad). If you prepaid for the whole series you got a mystery 21st game set after WWII.

Sun Nov 29 2020

Sleep 0600 to 1315 (7-1/4 hours)

  • California Contact Tracing app enabled (around now). I got a notification on my phone and a couple of taps to activate. That's about a smooth an onboarding as you can get without forcing a download and auto opt-in. Much better than a few months ago when critics were wondering how users would find out about these apps and download them.

Mon Nov 30 2020

Sleep 0500 to 1330. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Zoom started putting ads in their launch page. If you launch Zoom via web browser the page stays and after a few minutes it goes to an ad page. Classy.

Tue Dec 01 2020

Sleep 0300 to 1030. 1 hour nap. (8-1/2 hours)

  • Darn. Was working all day and didn't get a chance to go to the grocery store. Do have a package of skinless chicken thighs so I'm ok for another day.

Wed Dec 02 2020

Sleep 0530 to 1300. (7-1/2 hours)

  • Shower then grocery shopping at Safeway. No bathroom tissue at all. People making a run on bathroom tissue?

Thu Dec 03 2020

Sleep 0530 to 1145. (6-1/4 hours)

  • Almost overslept and missed appointment to pick up my new glasses. New glasses are nice. I can read a book without taking off my glasses.

Fri Dec 04 2020

Sleep 0530 to 1330. (8 hours)

  • DunDraCon 45 has been postponed to next year.
  • Trader Joe's for some food and bathroom tissue.
  • I keep buying their baked cheese crunchies (sort of like Cheetos) and keep regretting it.

Bundle of Holding - Spire

Spire is an indie RPG about a dark elven spire city conquered by high elves who have become the oppressors. PCs work for the resistance working to free the city from the bottom up (which kind of reminds me of Snowpiercer). It's a light RPG and people seem to like it. I'm not so sure if I want to buy it. It's still being produced and this Bundle of Holding is mostly the first couple of Kickstarters combined.

Spire: The City Must Fall ($19)
Strata ($17)

Blood and Dust (scenario) ($2)
Eidolon Sky (scenario) ($2)
Kings of Silver (scenario) ($2)

Shadow Operations (11 scenarios) ($6)
Black Magic ($6.50)
Codex of the Deep Spire ($4.50)
Book of Masks ($6.50)
Secrets Kept from the Sun ($1.50)

Seven Spire Audio Tracks ($10)

$23 for $77 of material. Still, after writing this entry I don't feel it so will skip.

Humble RPG Book Bundle - Cyberpunk by R Talsorian

Cyberpunk 2020 is one of the older RPGs in this genre and the 2020 version had the most supplements. This bundle is not everything in R Talsorian's CP 2020 line but it is everything being sold on Drive Thru RPG (I guess the other books either haven't been digitized yet or, for the two licensed sourcebooks, there is no current license).

CP-3231 Land of the Free ($12.50)

$250 of products for $15 is quite the deal.
