August 2024

Diary - Aug 24 to Aug 30 2024

Sat Aug 24 2024

Sleep 0700 to 1130 (4-1/2 hours)

  • Gloomhaven. I took the "there must be an alive enemy at the start of every turn" and concentrated on rushing forward to open the two doors in the dungeon. Second door I had to cloak for a couple of turns since I was in there by myself and I'm fairly crunchy.

Sun Aug 25 2024

Sleep 0200 to 0800, 1 hour in car, 1 hour in car (8 hours)

  • We visited mom and dad for the day. I was a bit car sick on the way but mild.
  • Christopher hooked up Dad's Chinese tv box. It has like no setup and I assume it goes to a server and you can choose a Chinese tv channel to watch. Seems a bit sus but I haven't researched it.

Mon Aug 26 2024

Sleep 0400 to 1200 (8 hours)

  • Apple Card info changed so have to update recurring payments. In Wallet you can search by Recurring Bills and see end merchant recurring payments (but it doesn't count PayPal or I suppose other inter-payment mediators so you have to remember those yourself).

Tue Aug 27 2024

Sleep 0630 to 1130, 30 nap (5-1/2 hours)

  • CSr and I visiting mom and dad. New mattresses come tomorrow so CSr wanted to be here just in case.

Wed Aug 28 2024

Sleep 0430 to 0930, 1315 to 1513 (7 hours)

  • We tried to drain mom and dad's water heater but there's enough silt buildup that only a trickle of water comes out the spout. We tried to poke it out but valve curves so couldn't get a good angle on blockage.

Thu Aug 29 2024

Sleep 0300 to 1130 (8-1/2 hours)

  • Bought Mongoose 2300 AD Bundle.

Fri Aug 30 2024

Sleep 0230 to 0830, 45m nap (6-3/4 hours)

  • Warlock Knight KS. This is originally a TFT solo adventure converted to Dungeon Fantasy. I'm thinking $60 (+ shipping) level which is a bit pricey ($20 for PDF, $20 for print, $10 for Foundry VTT module, $10 for quick reference card deck). Then again print level itself is $40 so I'm ok with a bit extra to support the (realistically) only GURPS/DF/TFT 3rd party publisher.

Star Trek Adventures 1E List

I went through the list of products in RPG Geek and below are the released products. So the Humble Bundle has pretty much all the retail products except dice, tricorder box, rules digest, and captain's log rpg. The bundle is short on PDF releases, which I guess might go into a future bundle. On further reflection I think I will buy the Humble Bundle.

Diary - Aug 17 to Aug 23 2024

Sat Aug 17 2024

Sleep 0630 to 1300 (6-1/2 hours)

  • DDO we did Plane of Night at R1 and it took 130 minutes. Then in Vault of Night Dave S accidentally ran off the ring and the rest of us couldn't do enough melee damage to destroy the three pillars at the same time.

Sun Aug 18 2024

Sleep 0300 to 0930 (6-1/2 hours)

  • Gaming at Dave and Sophia's. Their freezer is broken so we ate a lot of previously frozen food. New fridge arrives early Sep.

Mon Aug 19 2024

Sleep 2345 to 1000 (10-1/4 hours)

  • Sonic Internet went down for a few minutes about 1300 to 1309. 1323: email from Sonic about outage.
  • Amazon: Apple 2023 MacBook Pro Laptop M3 Pro chip with 11‑core CPU, 14‑core GPU, 14", 18 GB memory, 512 GB SSD for $1500 ($500 off). Really nice even though SSD is small. 1 TB SSD is $2100 ($300 off).

Tue Aug 20 2024

Sleep 0400 to 1100 (7 hours)

  • Opened the brown rice container and it has lots of little flies. Guess that's how you know it's fresh. Put it in the rice cooker bowl then tried to drown them and sift them out. Even after that I'm not sure I'm going to eat that rice and the main bag probably has lots of flies too. So now I know where these flies that I'd occasionally see came from. They're not regular flies; they're small, thin (sleek like), black.
  • If I listen closely to the bag of brown rice I can hear the bugs inside jumping around hitting the walls. Guess I should just seal and toss the whole back out.

Wed Aug 21 2024

Sleep 0545 to 1230 (6-3/4 hours)

  • I wanted to wake up at 0930, do a task, then go back to sleep. My alarm woke me up at 0930 and I changed it to 1230 and went back to sleep and missed doing the task.

Thu Aug 22 2024

Sleep 0015 to 0730, 45m nap (8 hours)

  • Christopher and I planned to drive over tonight and visit mom and dad so that we'd be there when the bed was delivered. This after asking last week and dad saying they weren't going to reschedule. So we're in the car about to get on the freeway and Christopher calls mom to warn her and she says they changed the delivery to Wed 28th. I immediately turned and headed home while Christopher talked to mom and she didn't suspect anything.

Fri Aug 23 2024

Sleep 0400 to 1100 (7 hours)

  • Safeway for $5 20 ct chicken nuggets. Regular price is like $7 so not much of a savings but they're good.
  • We played Gloomhaven online. Client is slower than usual. Will try rebooting before tomorrow night's game.

--------------------------

A rather eclectic mix which I own some of the early stuff (and reminds me I never received Operations Division PDF).

Not much in terms of adventures. Two mission compendiums (17 missions total), one adventure PDF, maybe the odd adventure in some of the supplements.

Way too many Player Character mini-supplements, which were just character sheets for various characters.

I don't know; I'm not feeling it. I'm willing to gamble on a giant bundle at a small price once Modiphius loses the Star Trek license -- that's what they did with Conan.

Should take an inventory of what 1E material this bundle omits.

Savage Worlds Thoughts

I was thinking a bit about why I didn't really get into Savage Worlds RPG. I have Classic Deadlands and Classic Deadlands: Hell on Earth and the latter I ran a campaign for my friends. A quirky cumbersome system but not too unlike D&D 3E (classes, stats, skills, feats except you roll stat dice instead of a d20).

When Savage Worlds version of Hell on Earth came out I bought it and switched the last part of the campaign to that ruleset. I feel the classes lost their flavor. Before pretty much every class had their own special powers system, whether magic or psionic or whatever and each class's version worked a little different than the others. In Savage Worlds all magic works the same you differentiate with special effects or spell selection. All edges work the same though once again different classes have different access to edges. It lost a lot of flavor compared to Classic rules (mind you Savage Worlds was intended to be a simpler and clearer rendition of Classic rules).

Here's the thing I hated with D&D 3E and Savage Worlds: as publishers add more classes the way to differentiate them is to add more feats (edges in Savage Worlds). In D&D there are no guidelines for how to create new feats -- all feats cost the same and the gating requirements are either character level or feat pre-reqs so you get these feat chains and then you a player has to figure which chain(s) they want to develop.

Similarly Savage World edges have either a level gate (in Savage Worlds this is flatter mook, heroic, veteran, legendary or something like that) or edge pre-reqs. Once again every new book can add more feats so it becomes a jumble.

Eventually you get different books presenting similar feats which makes it weird to mix and match.

Contrast to GURPS where almost all advantages are in the Characters book (a few were added in Powers, not sure if there are more) and instead a supplement might say "here is an advantage and this is what it does" with optionally showing that behind the scenes this "new" advantage is a standard advantage with appropriate modifiers. To me that's more coherently universal than having several supplements each with their own edges which don't need to be balanced between supplements. (It's why I also like HERO system.)

Savage Worlds is a great system to get into if you want to play lots of different worlds and I love that there are Savage Worlds versions of Rifts and Space: 1889 and other RPGs as well as many licensed media supplements. But unfortunately the rpg system itself doesn't do it for me.

Diary - Aug 10 to Aug 16 2024

Sat Aug 10 2024

Sleep 0430 to 1300 (8-1/2 hours)

  • Dave S hinting that now that we did Borderlands 3 once through he wants to play Red Dead Redemption 2.

Sun Aug 11 2024

Sleep 0530 to 1330 (8 hours)

  • Right hand is starting to hurt a bit. If I at your hand palm down it's on the left side where the wrist bends. Probably an RSI from mousing too much. Will need to rest it.

Mon Aug 12 2024

Sleep 0445 to 1230 (7-3/4 hours)

  • Every time I see that Ooma charge I think about cancelling since I have an extra phone line with Sonic. Ooma has gone from $4.25 to $7 which are all the required fees and taxes, though like all utilities some of those fees and taxes go back to the utility.

Tue Aug 13 2024

Sleep 0130 to 1030 (9 hours)

  • Bought the Ultimate Doctor Who RPG Collection from Humble Bundle. Had more errors than usual but sadly not that rare for Humble Bundle.

Wed Aug 14 2024

Sleep 0800 to 1500 (7 hours)

  • Got renewal notice from AAA. I don't really use it except for roadside stuff and auto insurance covers that. Did have to call AAA to cancel my membership but it was an easy process.

Thu Aug 15 2024

Sleep 0200 to 1000 (8 hours)

  • Fooling around with Discord permissions. Server level permissions do not filter down to category or channel. If I add role to category with all defaults that just means role doesn't change those settings from lower level roles in that category whereas I was expecting it doesn't change settings from server level role
  • I did see that you can set permissions at the individual user level. Is that new?

Fri Aug 16 2024

Sleep 0730 to 1130, 1 hour nap (5 hours)

  • Dave S seems bored with Borderlands 3 so we played some DDO. At R3 we still die a lot.

MacBook Air Budget Config

This is a budget configuration targeting $2k with taxes. MacBook Air M3 now supports two external monitors with lid closed (5K and 6K monitors but my two displays are budget 27" and 24" monitors so I'm set there). MagSafe 3 power port and that would be full which means I can't connect to USB hub on monitors.

Upshot means I'd need a dock. OWC 14-Port Thunderbolt Dock looks good and is often on sale for $100. Theoretically I can connect to the dock and it connects to both monitors and has USB ports for my external HD dock. 10% tax and free shipping makes it $110.

Looking at the MacBook Air 13" Price Guide from AppleInsider M3, 16 GB, 1 TB SSD is ($1700) is often at $150 off (and maybe on special sale $200 off). With 10% tax and free shipping that'd be $1705.

For both that comes to $1815.

1 TB SSD is not much space especially if I dual-boot to Windows so I'd depend on external storage (not cloud). 16 GB should be fine for most uses and it's not like I play high-end games.

On Geekbench my MBP 16" Intel is 1376 single, 6464 multi-core. Tom's Guide has benchmarks for the MacBook Air 2024 and it is 3082 single, 12087 multi-core. So would be nice improvement but not extreme but also not really expensive.

Additional as I was researching this: OWC Drive Dock, 2 bays, each supports SATA + NVMe U.2 (which is a standard for SSD in a 3.5" HD case form factor), $150. Quite a bit more expensive than the cheap Orico docks I bought but they look nice and support USB-C 3.2 which pairs well with the 14-port doc.

2024-08-17: Geekbench comparison above is best of 2019 vs low end 2024.

MacBook Air 2019 $1500 (16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) 1199 single, 3148 multi-core
MBP 13" 2019 $1700 (16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) 1342 single, 4141 multi-core

Bundle of Holding - Mongoose 2300AD 2E

Mongoose 2300AD 2E bundle for $31 gets you

Traveller Core Rules 2022 - since 2300AD is built on top of that
2300AD 2E - Core setting book
2300AD 2E Referee's Screen
Tools for Frontier Living - "a selection of equipment needed for survival on alien worlds"
Project Bayern - 450 light year journey campaign (a la
Ships of the Frontier - "drones, fighters, freighters, landers, warships, and stations"
Vehicles of the Frontier - "from bicycles to main battle tanks, from bulldozers to combat walkers"
Aerospace Engineers' Handbook - ship designer

On the positive side this is bundle has all of the 2300AD 2E products published so far. On the other hand there is only one adventure book, the Project Bayern campaign which I guess could be enough for one food-length campaign. I guess you could use 1E adventures though I look at the catalog and there aren't that many adventures or products for 1E.

In any case I'm inclined to buy this bundle because I've longed been intrigued by the setting.

Diary - Aug 03 to Aug 09 2024

Sat Aug 03 2024

Sleep 0615 to 1345 (7-1/2 hours)

  • Dave S is out so we played a bit of DDO. Legendary Ravenloft (An Invitation to Dinner to Mad Tea Party) at Reaper 5. For the most part fairly routine.

Sun Aug 04 2024

Sleep 0230 to 0730, 30m nap (5-1/2 hours)

  • Ex-WCBS lunch. Jesse, Lonnie, Peter, Steven, myself at Harborview Restaurant in San Francisco. It was nice.

Mon Aug 05 2024

Sleep 0400 to 1100, 1 hour nap (8 hours)

  • Although Scopely is good about announcing server maintenance a few days ahead of time it'd be nice if in-game there was an hour warning before maintenance starts since I always forget about maintenance. DDO does it and that works great.

Tue Aug 06 2024

Sleep 0530 to 1230, 30m nap (7-1/2 hours)

  • Bought the BattleTech Readouts bundle.

Wed Aug 07 2024

Sleep 0430 to 1200 (7-1/2 hours)

Thu Aug 08 2024

Sleep 0530 to 1230 (7 hours)

  • I've probably complained about this before. In Disney+ app if you change the language it sets for everything all the time. Netflix has more of a concept of native language: videos are shown in their native language with your subtitles and if you change the language it's only for that tv show (I think).
  • 1Password for Mac critical security issue. Fixed in recent update 8.10.36 (July 2024). Unfortunately I have a Mac App Store version (v6) and the current Mac App Store version is v7. Also the current version is a subscription with no free tier. So I guess time to delete 1Password from my devices. I was really only keeping it because I like it's password generator better than the Mac Password app, so I guess I could have kept 1Password just for that with no stored passwords.

Fri Aug 09 2024

Sleep 0815 to 1330, 1 hour nap (6-1/4 hours)

  • Safeway for $5/lb chicken tenders which are pretty good and Tillamook ice cream. I forgot I need rice so next time (Trader Joe's has small bags of rice but I buy the 20 lb Calrose).

Big Wargames

Criteria: bigger game companies, publish a wide variety of games (not a one-game or one-series company; filters out ADG or OSG), most expensive in-stock game (must be $100 or more; filters out Hexasim and Avalanche)

Columbia Games

EastFront 2nd Ed Bundle ($400) - The second editions of EastFront, WestFront, EuroFront with map updated to a big Neoprene mat. Block game, strategic level, doesn't model economics or politics.

Compass Games

The Third World War, Designer Signature Edition ($200) - Reprints design and expands on component quality of GDW's' The Third World War 4-game series published in 1984, so this is a system covering WW3 from the perspective of the mid-1980's-war-starts-today from the Arctic through Europe and into the Middle East.

Dan Verssen Games

Fleet Commander Nimitz 3rd Edition ($110) - Solitaire, strategic-level Pacific War from Jan 1942 to Sep 1945, although as four linked campaigns rather than one grand game.

Decision Games

Axis Empires Ultimate Edition ($330) - This is Totaler Krieg and Dai Senso combined, adding Schiffskrieg (are and naval expansion) and Dice of Decision II (random campaign generator). Big WW2 strategic-level game that can get wildly ahistorical because of random tech advances and politics.

GMT Games

Unfortunately A World At War is out of print so their most expensive in-stock game:

A Time for Trumpets: The Battle of the Bulge, December 1944 ($150) - Battle of the Bulge at the battalion level. Five maps, 2300 counters, 4 turns per day.

Multi-Man Publishing

The Greatest Day: Utah Beach ($330) - Grand Tactical Series (company level) and volume 2 of a 3 volume series on D-Day. Volume 3 is not even on pre-order. A bit of an unusual topic, all of D-Day or Omaha Beach would be more popular I think.

An alternative would have been The Devil's Cauldron + Where Eagles Dare which is all of Market Garden but both games are OOP.

Of the above I'm most interested in The Third World War (for nostalgia even I though never played the old game but 1980's WW3 I find interesting) and Axis Empires Ultimate for a gonzo WW2 experience.

Bundle of Holding - Mazes FRP

Mazes FRP bundle is for this minimalistic fantasy game that is player driven (GM never rolls dice). $18 non-increasing price gets you:

Mazes RPG

Mazes Monthly Modules - each is a 10 to 25-page adventure
01: Beneath the Moor of Sorrow
02: Barrow of the Shornhorn Skald
03: The Hidden Sewers of Harrowgate
04: Against the Eyeclops
05: Temple of the Water Elemental
06: The Catacombs of Kryyx'ixyl
07: The Broken Chamber
08: The Tower of the Lost Archmage
09: The House of Mold
10: Ghost Knives of the Necromancer
11: Tunnels of the Lizard People
12: In the Clutch of Darkness

Mazes Monthly Folio: Year 1 - compiles stuff from the first 12 issues (e.g. all hazards in one section). I kind of hate buying the same thing again in a different format.

I guess my problem is that since is it's own unique non-obvious dice rolling system it'd be hard to convert to another system. Also there are lots of bundles this month so I think I'll skip this one.

Diary - Jul 27 to Aug 02 2024

Sat Jul 27 2024

Sleep 0600 to 1315 (7-1/4 hours)

  • Bought Tangled and Zed & Two Noughts which only sold at Exalted Funeral and they happened to be on sale when I checked.

Sun Jul 28 2024

Sleep 0600 to 1400 (8 hours)

  • Just realized I have 4 days of Prime left and a fair amount of videos I still want to watch.

Mon Jul 29 2024

Sleep 0145 to 0900 (7-1/4 hours)

  • BotezLive Chess Camp continues. I've been listening to Joe Bruin commentary (with various guest analysts) and it's been pretty good.

Tue Jul 30 2024

Sleep 0030 to 0130, 0615 to 1115 (6 hours)

  • With a good effort finished watching all the Prime videos I targeted, except Cute Bodyguard which I watched 4 episodes and decided it wasn't worth watching the rest in the time I had. Watched about 126 hours of videos in 30 days, while still kind of keeping up with my regular video watching.

Wed Jul 31 2024

Sleep 0545 to 1245 (7 hours)

  • Apparently CSUA recovered the old Soda hard drive so if you still have a login you can go in and see your old home directories. Unfortunately I deleted that password a few months ago as part of trimming old passwords from Keychain.

Thu Aug 01 2024

Sleep 0500 to 1315 (8-1/4 hours)

  • DriveThruRPG sale ended at 0600 today which meant after midnight I bought five items using my bank debit card (need 10 debit card transactions per month, I have at least 4 other transactions set for this month).

Fri Aug 02 2024

Sleep 0330 to 0430, 0830 to 1500 (7-1/2 hours)

  • Borderlands 3. We finished the first run-through (that final chapter is just one final fight then some ending dialog stuff). Started 2nd run on Mayhem 1 and it's quite a bit tougher.

Our Golden Age BackerKit

Our Golden Age (OGA): An Ultraviolet Grasslands RPG []equel is at the high level a boxed set with:

  • Our Golden Age and the Mother Machine - a campaign setting around a circle sea on the same world as Ultraviolet Grasslands.
  • The Vastlands Guidebook - an RPG for use with the campaign
  • Circle Sea Grand Map
  • Yellow Nemesis Dice Set
  • Tour Guide's Screen - GM screen
  • Vastlands Reference Cards
  • Circle Sea Post Cards
  • Nemesis and Ministry Cards

I think the boxed set is $95 which is a lot. The reasonable print one is $45 which only prints OGA but not the Vastlands Guidebook but I guess if you have Ultraviolet Grasslands in print this would be a companion piece on your bookshelf. For me I guess the appropriate one would be the $25 PDF version.

Considering buying it to go along with the Ultraviolet Grasslands bundle, although the Vastlands Guidebook seems to supersede that bundle's Synthetic Dream Machine, Magitechnica, and Zoa of the Vastlands.
