I guess in the end his works are outside my genres of 4-color supers or science fiction.

I asked Dad where we used to live in Lima. I think he said Barranco (I also remember San Isidro which is where I think grandma and great grandma lived; today my cousins live in Miraflores). He said the brothers had a chicken farm with 1M chickens but had to sell the farm when the government set chicken prices at a price that a small farm like theirs couldn't sell for a profit (and even the black market with the various bribes and such was about break-even). This was back in the late 1970's.

With no job prospects (I guess economy was bad at the time hence government fixing prices) that's why we moved to USA. Dad used the money from selling his part of the chicken farm (at a loss) and sold his house (again at a loss -- I guess the huge nice house I remember where one of the carpenters cut his hand open on a bench electric saw).

I guess we were not illegal immigrants (possibly used a tourist visa for 6 months) because we got a business visa which is why my parents opened a Chinese restaurant. They made enough money to buy a house with a nice school nearby (which my sister and I walked to along with a lot of other kids) and a middle school about 10 minute bike ride or 30 minute walk away. Uncle Martin (my Dad's half brother in New York) submitted application forms for naturalization which we got eventually.

After seven years the restaurant was making a profit but mom didn't want to invest in improvements and more help and dad was tired of 10-hour work days 6 days a week so they sold the restaurant for $50k. Mom took that chance to go back to university to get her CPA (2 years) and then an internship at State of California government since we are officially Hispanic. Dad went to work for Sacramento County (as I remember).

2026-05-14: I remember we got our Green Cards through some sort of amnesty program, which I thought meant amnest for illegal immigrants. Not sure how that fits into the above narrative.

Went with Dad and CSr to replace my Sky River Casino card so that dad can play on Wednesdays ($10 free credit for seniors). Three different dishes for dinner (Lunar New Year style).
* DDO (CSr, DW and I) Last night we started Vecna Unleashed, first two quests. Tonight we did the third quest and finished part 1 (part 2 is six quests). Also did one of the side quests, which are shorter than main quests.

• Dentist for cleaning. It was raining on and off, mostly on. One accident on the 680/24 which slowed me down for 10 minutes so I was a little late. On the way back drove through San Francisco. One stall which slowed me down though I happened to be on a lane adjacent. All in all almost 4 hours.

I did search (e.g. "Tigers at Red Sox") then hit return (usually I rely automatic search results) and then can find the game (mind you it does say "Apr 17" but no year so I wonder how you'll determine the right game if home team+away team+month+day happen to match. But you have to know the teams because "Friday Night Baseball" search does not return old games.

Looks like I bought all these in a previous Humble Bundle back in Mar 2024. This time it only adds Fall of the Imperium ($28 retail) and I guess $20 would be a discount but it seems like a waste of my previous purchase. Didn't see anything on rpg.net about the line ending so I guess I'll wait for the next bundle.

Nemo was visiting Lima mostly to try out authentic Peruvian food. That got me to thinking which were my favorites.

Arroz con pollo - (Literally rice and chicken). There are a lot of versions of this. The Peruvian one comes out as green rice because it's a heavy cilantro (coriander) sauce. It's great fresh and unfortunately not that great once you refrigerate it and reheat it.

Milanesa de pollo y tallarines verdes - Chicken breast beaten flat then breaded and pan fried so it comes out crispy, served with green spaghetti (the sauce is more spinach than basil and not oily like pesto). Unlike arroz con pollo this tastes great even cold.

Seco de carne - Beef stew with potatoes and peas and carrots. It's another cilantro-based sauce though the sauce comes out more orange. Good with rice.

Aji de gallina - Yellow curry stew with chicken. With potatoes and rice it's really good.

Chupe de camarones - The previous four my dad makes regularly and always good. Dad sometimes makes chupe but it was never my favorite. Later I tried restaurant chupe and it's really good and the soup has more flavor than how dad makes it. Big shrimp; corn and other vegetables; potatoes, noodles, or rice. The soup by itself is what's really good. Again this is quite edible cold or re-heated.

Mostly easy though the final quest we were debating removing the curses and it killed five of six characters then after we finished we went back to the mud caves for the optional and it killed three more characters and we gave up.

Looking at the contents there is still much missing but I guess this is all Valiant has reprinted so far.

After taking the Calorie Counter XLS spreadsheet I found and fixing the formulas for Apple Numbers I then made a few changes.

For Weekly and Monthly I wanted Calories per Day. The formula for Weekly Calories per Day:

For Entries::Table 1::G, I created a column WeekDateKey

IF(ISBLANK(A2),"",CONCATENATE(E2,"-",A2))
Which will return, for example, 2026-W13-2026-03-26. Since each day has several entries, one for each meal, there will be several lines with 2026-W13-2026-03-26.

LEFT(Entries::Table 1::G, 8)

Then returns something like 2026-W13.

FILTER (Entries::Table 1::G, LEFT(Entries::Table 1::G, 8) = D3)

Now Filter only returns lines that match the Week (YYYY-WW) column. There will be several lines each for 2026-W13-2026-03-26, 2026-W13-2026-03-27, 2026-W13-2026-03-28 and so on.

UNIQUE

Filters out the duplicates so now we have one line per day.

COUNTA

Just counts the number of lines which is the number of days in the week.

Now, we could have just used a static 7 since every week except the first and last will have seven days in the spreadsheet. But the same principle applies to Monthly Calories per Day.

Although here we can use the Daily Totals Date column for the filtering.

Once again though maybe using static numbers instead of calculating for the month days. We could use a table since the number of days varies.

But static numbers presume we record every day which we might not so I guess calculating both days in week and days in month is still a good idea.

There are three other hardcover books but you need to pay $350 for that bundle. Luckily I don't care about D&D 5E and am happy enough with the current Mongoose Traveller 2E rules (and I didn't see any mention of conversion from MT 2E to Traveller 5e.
• Anyways I was on Backerkit looking for a way to disable getting added to product specific mailing lists when the company I follow launches one because that's annoying getting two identical emails. But apparently can't disable that.

• Accidentally opened Preview on my iPhone and noticed they're a scan documents function. Scanned my tax forms and found it maxes out at 24 pages at a time then you have to create a new document. It does auto-straightening so the scans come out ok. It's good enough to replace Scanner Pro which is what I currently use for document scanning. But will test more. Haven't tried 2-page scanning -- Scanner Pro has a 2-page mode for books and pamphlets that will split up a 2-page scan into two 1-page images automatically as you scan, though it is a bit fiddly.

2026-04-19: Day before deadline and decided not to buy.

I decided to try using a spreadsheet rather than an app since I'm getting tired of ads (the two apps I used a lot are MyFitnessPal and Lose It!).

Search for "calorie tracking numbers spreadsheet" and the first hit is Free Calorie Tracker Spreadsheet in Google Sheets and that looks about the level I want. You're entering a line with date, meal type, description, and calories and then it'll calculate daily, weekly and monthly totals.

The second hit is a spreadsheet where you're putting in protein, carbs, veggies, fruits, fats, condiments and it will do summaries but that's way too much work. The third entry is another spreadsheet that also wants a lot of data but doesn't have summaries.

Back to the first spreadsheet. It's a Google spreadsheet so I exported to XLS and imported into Apple Numbers. Some of the formulas broke:

WeekKey uses

=IF(A2="","",TEXT(A2,"yyyy")&"-W"&TEXT(WEEKNUM(A2,2),"00"))
where that TEXT function doesn't exist in Numbers. I replaced it with this formula

IF(ISBLANK(A2),"",CONCATENATE(YEAR(A2),"-W",WEEKNUM(A2)))
I didn't find how you would concatenate strings inline instead of using a function.


Similarly MonthKey

=IF(A2="","",TEXT(A2,"yyyy-mm"))
is replaced with

IF(ISBLANK(A2),"",CONCATENATE(YEAR(A2),"-",(IF(MONTH(A2)<10,CONCATENATE("0",MONTH(A2)),MONTH(A2)))))
A little longer because MONTH(A2) doesn't return a leading zero which I like


On the second page the date field is

which I replaced with

SORT(UNIQUE(FILTER(Entries::Table 1::A,ISDATE(Entries::Table 1::A))))
And my fix use the whole table not just the first 1k rows.


Week and Month fixes are very similar.


Tab three unfortunately Numbers does not support dynamic drop down lists. So instead I changed the field to a date field and you have to type in the date yourself.

• Watched Japan Grand Prix. Unfortunately Oliver Bearman crashed (right after George Russell and Charles LeClerc did pit stops so that was unfortunate for them and it let Kimi Antonelli pit, catch up, and eventually win the race) and Franco Colapinto came 16th. Leaves me at 18 points and virtual tie at #4.

• HOA Meeting. We're adding Sunday to garbage rotation (Custom Maintenance will rotate our garbage bins on Saturday and on Sunday) and hopefully that alleviates bin overfilling on Sunday. Getting two bids for engineering destructive testing to examine our courtyard crack (it's a straight crack along the pour line so hopefully not a big deal).

• DDO: Dave S and CSr not around. Dave W and I tried Body and Mind (for the first time) at R1 (we're level 34 -- he has a rogue with that weapon that turns people into gold or platinum for a few seconds and I'm a sun elf). One rare boss was a bit tough but we didn't die otherwise easy until the end fight. Electrical floors killed us quickly. There are generators we probably need to destroy and a table we can stand on. Try again tomorrow night.

Sekai Project 2026 is a $15 bundle. These are visual novels with various gameplay styles (there's a dating sim for example) and grades of NSFW content (some games have 18+ DLCs). Sekai Project has a lot of games out so this is a grab of mostly old games.

I own some of these probably from a previous bundle but I haven't played any. Still, $133 retail that I don't own so $15 is worth it.

According to Momo, there are two other girls on the island: Kuro and Moca. However, they had a falling out between themselves for some reason and they all live on their own.
• My Girlfriend’s Special Place (Mar 2023, $15) One day, our hero is headed home from Akihabara when he's mistaken for a molester. The person accusing him is his childhood friend, Fuyuka Akiyoshi.
